Sibiu-Agnita Railway update from Laurie Webb, our Romanian Correspondent
On 14/15th May, an 0-8-0T and two carriages were brought at short notice to Cornatel by owner
Georg Hocevar for a chartered trip. Mihai Blotor, President of Asociatia Mocaniteii volunteer
group, asked if the train could remain for the weekend, and went on national radio on the
Thursday evening to publicise the event. Over 1,000 visitors, including six from the UK, rode
on the train over the two days, which made eight return trips along the 3.5km of track restored
by the volunteers with the help of SARUK members from England and Wales. Although hastily
arranged, passenger numbers almost matched the widely publicised steam weekend in September
2015.

On 21st May, 41 UK visitors were given a talk by Mr Blotor on the history of the line and the
work of the volunteer group since 2009, followed by a trip in the Trabant-engined draisine and
trailer cars. (Sighisoara-Agnita opened 1898, and to Sibiu in 1910; Sighisoara-Agnita closed
in 1965 and Agnita-Sibiu in 2001). Later that day, a group of 12 UK visitors rode along the
restored 3.6kms of track.

The Mayor of Sibiu has requested a steam weekend to coincide with a festival in the city, and
has offered to pay for the loco and carriage - an offer the "Friends of the Mocanita" couldn't
refuse. This will take place on 24-26th June with, hopefully, more track cleared and
resleepered to extend the run by a few hundred metres.
Over the summer, volunteers, again aided by SARUK Supporters Group, will continue to clear the
track, replace sleepers and missing track spikes and fishplates, and dig out a tarmacced over
level crossing to allow running to Hosman, 6km from Cornatel, for the planned September steam
weekend (24/25th). There is a siding just beyond the level crossing into which the loco will
run after being detached from the carriages, which will then be drawn forward by a small diesel
loco. The steam loco will then be recoupled to the carriages to enable it to always be at the
front of the train, rather than operating as a "push-pull".
